Los Angeles, United States– The long-running Netflix series Stranger Things concluded with its season five finale released this week, bringing the science-fiction drama to a close after nearly a decade on air. The final episode debuted globally on December 31, according to Netflix, wrapping up the storylines centered on Hawkins, Indiana, and the alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.
Created by the Duffer Brothers, the series premiered in 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched original shows. Season five was positioned as the final chapter, with creators previously confirming it would resolve the central conflict between the town’s residents and the supernatural forces threatening their world. Netflix said the finale was designed to provide narrative closure rather than set up future seasons.
The final episode revisits the emotional and physical consequences of earlier events, focusing on the core group of characters introduced in season one. In earlier interviews released by Netflix, the Duffer Brothers said the cast filmed many of the final scenes together to preserve continuity and emotional authenticity as the show came to an end.
The series finale arrives after multiple production delays, including those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and industry labor strikes. Netflix confirmed that filming wrapped earlier in 2025, with post-production extending through much of the year due to the show’s heavy visual effects workload.
